Dumb question

Simple question from a simpleton. I'm working through Microsoft Press SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services Step by Step. It references a database rs2005sbsDW, which as far as I can tell was not included with either the sample databases on the SQL Server (standard edition) install disk or the Step by Step book. Where the heck is it? What am I missing.

Trying to reinstall the sample databases from the SQL Server install disk's tells me I have everything installed already.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Did you follow the instructions on page XV? The files will be installed via a setup.

I did thanks. I was using the book a bit too literally. The instructions for specifying the database in the connection manager just suggest typing the database name in or using the drop down box, neither which accepted or display the rs2005sbsDW database. I assumed it just wasn't there. Once I knew where is was, it became obvious to use the browse option in connection manager instead.

Thanks.

DTSRun string

I have a job that I moved from one server to another via generate sql script.
This job contains approximately 25 separate steps, where each step
calls/executes a DTS package using DTSRun.
The job is failing and I suspect that it may be attempting to call/execute
the DTS package on the previous server. In each step the DTSRun command is
used, followed by a long alphanumeric string, such as the following:
DTSRun
/~Z0xF8E8465A4E87F65E80A594D219039F3DB02F031FE0290BC36746B34119246D0BA612A999760D84E91CD170332E5D7CB590B764064631A1951589D6F310C930314F0F68864FCADAF0232E3454D07DE9BF7DC458BE8D2E4EA0C3A3FBE361B352C4319ED868A5232FAEDCA9031A0BB43FBFF026E3B668A032B1E8316B
How can I ensure the DTS package being called is the same DTS package on the
same server as the job? Is the long alphanumeric string an ID of some sort
that I can compare?

DTSrun /n JobName /S Servername /e
Look at the DTSrun command for an explanation of the switches.

of some sort?

Message posted via http://www.sqlmonster.com|||The encrypted command line has the server (either as local
or by name), package, login info etc so yes if you just
copied the job from another server, it's could likely be
pointing to the wrong server.

the DTS designer. It's encrypted because you can have database login
information in the string. Alternatively, you can specify package name,
server, authentication, etc. using the DTSRun command by typing up the
command yourself. That way you can ensure what server the package runs on.
I believe Books on Line covers the DTSRun command.

scheduling the package via the DTS designer is an encrypted string, not an ID
of some object.

DTSLookup error handling

Hello all,
Does any one know how I can capture the sql error message when the sql statement in DTSLookup step fails?
e.g.
I have this sql statement in a DTSLookup task:
insert into table1 (col1) values (?); select @.@.ERROR

Let's say for some reason (bad data), my insert statement fails and I want to know why. So I added "select @.@.ERROR" to capture the error. However, from the Lookup window, I cannot save the result of @.@.ERROR to a global variable or to an output parameter. I want to log this error in the next step that handles the OnFailure workflow, but I don't know how.

Can someone help please?

Thanks,
K.Hello all,

Can someone help please?

Thanks,
K.

Check out this link (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q221193).

From what I recall, you cannot handle DTS errors in VB Script, which is maddening to me. We sorta got around this by creating a VB DLL and then instantiated the VB DLL from within a calling DTS package. I've never been really happy with the solution, but I'm just the production DBA and not the "real" DBA  .

DTS: One failure step for multiple process steps

How can I make this work?

I have two process steps in a package and one failure step. Both process steps have On Failure workflows to the failure step. The problem I'm having is that it seems if two or more workflows go to the same failure step then neither go to the failure step, but it does go if only one process step is attached to it.

I know I can create duplicate steps for each process step, but I was hoping to be able to do it this way FMI.

Thanks for your assistance.Has anyone tried what I am talking about on their end? I'd really like to know if it's just a problem I'm having.

DTS zipping a file

Hello there.
I have this DTS that creates 5 files. The last step on the DTS is anActiveX task that moves the files to a certain folder. Bun?t now what I really need to do is zip the file and leave it on the server.

This DTS is executed by a job on the SQL Server, and the files are created on a network share with access to the SQLServer user that executes the job.

I've been trying to find out information on how to zip the folder and I've come up with two options:

1. install winzip on the server and run winzip32.exe passing arguments to it.
2. use the standard zipfldr.dll that comes with Windows to do the job.

Number one is out of my reach since IT department don't want the software installed, I have to stick with number 2.

Now I've read that using rundll32.exe I can run the dll as an exe, but I need the entry point to the dll wich I cannot find besides the RouteTheCall %L, which actually opens an explorer window with the folder or zip file I pass to it as an argument.

Does anyone know if this is possible either using rundll32.exe or automating the task through an AttiveX task?

TIA.

I would really like to find the answer to this question as well but, I don't see any replies and I noticed that this posting is 8 months old. I also could not find any information on the web as of yet. If I find anything I will respond to this post.

I just searched for "zip file" on msdn... http://blogs.msdn.com/dotnetinterop/archive/2006/04/05/567402.aspx

|||Easiest method of compressing files is to use rar.exe (WinRar CLI).

rar -a C:\FilesToCompress\*.xxx C:\MyCompressedfile.rar

Can run that through a CLI in SSIS and DTS.
